Irish Kerry Bog Pony Breed Characteristics
Size The Kerry Bog Pony is a small draft type equine, whose height is usually between 10 & 12 hands. Some ponies are slightly taller, but still maintain all the breed characteristics.
Colour Kerry Bog ponies are many colours, the majority being solid colour including: bay, chestnut and black. But there are also: grey, dun, roan, palomino, as well as broken coloured ponies, e.g. black and white / bay and white / red and white etc amongst the pure-bred Kerrys.
Head Short, straight or with a slight attractive dish. A kind almond shaped eye, and small ears.
Body & Limbs The ponies’ bodies are well proportioned, strong and muscular with a good sloping shoulder, sound limbs with excellent flat bone and short cannon bone. They have a good depth of girth, strong loins and hindquarters, with a pronounced second thigh. They have good width of chest with plenty of heart room.
Feet Strong well formed feet with hard horn, often not requiring shoeing.
Coat In summer, a sleek fine coat, but in winter the ponies grow a thick, full dense coat which can withstand cold winter weather.
Temperament Solid, reliable, good natured and sensible.
Action Kerry Bog ponies are exceptional movers with a beautiful level action low to the ground and they are extremely sure footed.
